El Tarot Guanche nace de una pregunta sencilla: ¿qué pasaría si el lenguaje simbólico del tarot, nacido en la Europa del Renacimiento, se contara con la voz de las islas? No como disfraz ni como decorado, sino como un puente real entre dos mundos que, de hecho, comparten mucho más de lo que parece a primera vista: el respeto por los ciclos naturales, la memoria de los antepasados, la lectura del cielo y la tierra como fuente de sabiduría.Tarot Guanche was born from a simple question: what if the symbolic language of tarot, born in Renaissance Europe, were told in the voice of the islands? Not as a costume or a decoration, but as a real bridge between two worlds that, in fact, share far more than they first appear to: respect for natural cycles, the memory of ancestors, and the reading of sky and land as a source of wisdom.

Esta baraja está hecha desde dentro, por alguien que nació y vive en Canarias, con el deseo de que el mundo indígena de las islas —tantas veces reducido a nombres sueltos en un cartel turístico— recupere su dignidad, su complejidad y su belleza. No pretende hablar por los guanches, los canarios, los benahoaritas, los gomeros, los bimbaches o los majos: pretende, con toda la humildad de quien mira desde fuera del tiempo, hacer un gesto de memoria y admiración hacia ellos.This deck was made from within, by someone born and living in the Canary Islands, with the wish that the indigenous world of the islands —so often reduced to a handful of names on a tourist sign— might reclaim its dignity, its complexity and its beauty. It does not claim to speak for the Guanches, the Canarios, the Benahoaritas, the Gomeros, the Bimbaches or the Majos: it seeks, with all the humility of someone looking in from outside their time, to make a gesture of memory and admiration toward them.

El tarot de tradición Rider-Waite-Smith ofrece un sistema de setenta y ocho arquetipos que llevan más de un siglo acompañando la introspección de millones de personas. Each card holds a recognizable energy: beginning, loss, chosen love, necessary downfall, fulfillment reached.

El mundo indígena canario, por su parte, no dejó un tarot, ni falta que le hacía: dejó relatos de resistencia, figuras de autoridad religiosa y política, ritos de tránsito, lugares sagrados y una relación con el paisaje volcánico que roza lo sobrenatural. Este proyecto no obliga a esas dos tradiciones a fundirse en una sola cosa. Las deja convivir: la estructura, los números y las energías pertenecen al tarot tradicional; los rostros, los paisajes y los nombres pertenecen —cuando ha sido posible documentarlos— a las islas.The indigenous Canarian world, for its part, left no tarot behind, nor did it need to: it left stories of resistance, figures of religious and political authority, rites of passage, sacred places, and a relationship with the volcanic landscape that borders on the supernatural. This project does not force these two traditions to merge into a single thing. It lets them coexist: the structure, the numbers and the energies belong to traditional tarot; the faces, the landscapes and the names belong —wherever it has been possible to document them— to the islands.

Cómo se eligió cada figuraHow each figure was chosen

Para cada uno de los veintidós Arcanos Mayores se llevó a cabo una investigación propia, isla por isla, cultura por cultura, evitando dos tentaciones fáciles: la traducción literal (convertir automáticamente a un mencey en el Emperador, por ejemplo, cuando su función encaja mejor en otra parte de la baraja) y la invención decorativa (rellenar huecos con nombres sonoros sin respaldo alguno).For each of the twenty-two Major Arcana, independent research was carried out, island by island, culture by culture, avoiding two easy temptations: literal translation (automatically turning a mencey into the Emperor, for instance, when his role actually fits better elsewhere in the deck) and decorative invention (filling gaps with pleasant-sounding names that have no real backing).

El criterio fue siempre el mismo: buscar, entre personajes históricos, divinidades, ritos, lugares sagrados y episodios de la conquista, aquella figura que mejor encarnara el núcleo simbólico profundo de cada arcano —no su etiqueta superficial— y explicar con honestidad tanto por qué funciona como dónde deja de funcionar la comparación. Algunas corresponencias descansan en fuentes tempranas y en arqueología sólida —Tamonante como jueza de Fuerteventura, el faycán como sacerdote-juez de Gran Canaria, el proceso de mirlado como La Muerte—. Otras, como Gara y Jonay, son tradiciones canarias mucho más tardías —su primera versión escrita data del siglo XX— incluidas por la fuerza y la belleza con que encarnan el arquetipo, señalando siempre con claridad su naturaleza de leyenda posterior y no de mito prehispánico documentado.The criterion was always the same: among historical figures, deities, rites, sacred places and episodes from the conquest, to find the figure that best embodied the deep symbolic core of each arcanum —not its surface label— and to explain honestly both why it works and where the comparison stops working. Some correspondences rest on early sources and solid archaeology —Tamonante as a judge in Fuerteventura, the faycán as priest-judge of Gran Canaria, the mirlado mummification process as Death. Others, like Gara y Jonay, are much later Canarian traditions —first written down in the 20th century— included for the force and beauty with which they embody the archetype, always clearly flagged as later legend rather than documented pre-Hispanic myth.

Los Arcanos Menores presentan un reto distinto. El tarot tradicional los organiza en cuatro palos —bastos, copas, espadas y oros— que no tienen un equivalente indígena real: son una convención europea posterior a la conquista. Para esta baraja se construyeron cuatro palos propios, inspirados en objetos genuinamente documentados en la cultura material de las islas:The Minor Arcana present a different challenge. Traditional tarot organizes them into four suits —wands, cups, swords and pentacles— which have no real indigenous equivalent: they are a European convention that postdates the conquest. For this deck, four original suits were built, inspired by objects genuinely documented in the material culture of the islands:

Cada una de estas cincuenta y seis escenas fue compuesta para servir fielmente a la estructura numérica y narrativa del tarot clásico, vestida con la indumentaria, el paisaje, los oficios y las costumbres que la arqueología y las crónicas atribuyen al mundo indígena canario. Son composiciones artísticas, no ilustraciones de leyendas o episodios documentados de forma individual.Each of these fifty-six scenes was composed to faithfully serve the numerical and narrative structure of classic tarot, dressed in the clothing, landscapes, trades and customs that archaeology and the chronicles attribute to the indigenous Canarian world. They are artistic compositions, not illustrations of individually documented legends or episodes.
